HAZELWOOD MINE FIRE INQUIRY TO ADDRESS MINE REHABILITATION TERMS OF REFERENCE

Tomorrow the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry will commence its final series of public hearings into mine rehabilitation in the Latrobe Valley

They will be held at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon and run from December 8-11 then return on 14, 15 and 18 December.

Over December 8-11 the Board will be addressing Terms of Reference 8 and 9, which task the Board with identifying short, medium and long term of options for the rehabilitation of Latrobe Valley coal mines and assessing these options against specific criteria to determine their suitability.

The following week the Board will address Term of Reference 10 which relates to reviewing of the current systems that are in place to ensure rehabilitation of the mines.

People appearing before the Board will include members of the community, employees of the Hazelwood, Loy Yang and Yallourn Mines and the Latrobe City Council, mining experts and representatives from the State Government, including Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley.

Chair of Board Bernard Teague said ‘these proceedings are the culmination of our work related to mine rehabilitation, we have held community consultations and received written submissions, we know this a complex issue that is important to the community.’

The Board report on mine rehabilitation is scheduled to be delivered to the Governor of Victoria on 15 March 2016.
