PUBLIC HEARINGS INTO HAZELWOOD MINE FIRE IMPACT ON RATES OF DEATH IN THE LATROBE VALLEY

On 1 September the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry will commence public hearings into whether the Hazelwood Mine Fire contributed to increased numbers of death in the Latrobe Valley.

The hearings form part of the Board’s investigations into term of reference 6, which requires the Board of Inquiry to examine whether the Hazelwood Mine Fire contributed to increased numbers of deaths in the Latrobe Valley, reviewing statistics across 2009 to 2014.

“We are looking at data from across 2009 to 2014 to assess whether the Hazelwood Mine Fire contributed to increased numbers of death in the Latrobe Valley” said board member Professor John Catford.

The hearings will not be looking at term of reference 7, the opportunities for health improvement in the Latrobe Valley, nor will they address health impacts currently being experienced by the community.

The public hearings will run from 1 – 3 September at Kernot Hall in Morwell.

The public are encouraged to come along to attend the hearings to hear the evidence presented.
